Auberge Du Riou

"As another reviewer mentioned, this hotel is a bit off the beaten path and seems to be favored by hikers. We were doing a tour on motorcycles and the owners were very welcoming and helped us position the bikes under an overhang for the night. The rooms are on the small side by US standards but very clean and have nice views of the mountains. The dinner and local wine that we had in their restaurant was excellent and very reasonably priced. It was well worth the 15 minute detour from the main road to stay in such pleasant surroundings."

"Nice evening spent at Auberge du Riou! Dinner was excellent and a wonderful surprise. Beds were firm and comfortable, the sound of the creek nearby lulled us to sleep. Only note is that the auberge is not the first picture, so we were a bit surprised when arriving, but charming nonetheless."

"This was a very unusual hotel set high up in the mountains, miles from anywhere, but extremely beautiful. We were in a tiny little village, no shops, no restaurants (except our hotel which only served between 8 and 9 pm) and no bars (again except our hotel but only open at night). The rooms were in a separate block. They only have 8 rooms, 4 upstairs and 4 down which opened out onto a patio area and looked over trees, streams and mountains. Idyllic!! The owners are a husband and wife and the husband is also the chef. The meals were second to none, no complaints whatsoever, and we're massive! The place was also very clean."

"Mme Ciais, friendly and relaxed, runs this auberge in a village on the GR510 long-distance walk. Puget-Rostang is a brisk hour-and-a-half's walk from Puget-Theniers, its neighbour in the Var valley, 300 metres below. And the 790 Lignes d'Azur bus will take you from the bus-stop on Promenade des Anglais, on the other side of the road to Nice airport, in time for dinner at the auberge.||From Puget-Rostang it's a day's walking to Rigaud, and from Rigaud it's another day's walk to Thiery. Beautiful footpaths through woods and meadows, and a spectacular view of the 800-metre high cliffs of the Mairola mountain. Mme Ciais will make you a packed lunch - for us, baguette with jambon cru and gherkins - to power you all the way."

"Before considering this hotel, make sure you have a booking as it is really out of the way, 20mn from main road... We didn't book as it was out of season and on-line comments mentioned a warm welcome.....||Reception opens at 3pm, we arrived at 3.15 door was open, we rang the bell, could hear some footsteps upstairs. Waiting we walked around came back to find THE DOOR LOCKED.... and had to find alternative accommodation.||Warm welcome indeed. To avoid disappointment make sure the owner is aware of your arrival....."
